Bull Shoals Lake: Wilderness Trail said the lake level this week is 647.71, 6½ feet below normal pool. The thermocline has been dropping a little each week with the pool drawn down. This week the thermocline is at 35 feet and steady. As of Sunday morning, the surface temperature was 77 degrees. Crappie were spotty this week, one day they were on the brush piles and the next day they were suspended out in front of them. Crappie minnows still are the best bait to use, but grubs and Swimming Minnows are also triggering a few. Largemouth bass made a little move towards the banks with the cool down but that move will be short lived with the heat. Work the banks in the middle of the pockets and creeks first thing in the morning with buzzbaits or Zara Spooks. After the sun hits the surface, move to secondary points with jigs, Carolina rigs or Mojo rigs. Smallmouth bass are feeding on crayfish on chunk rock and pea rock points. The best bite is in the morning and again around 2 to 6 in the afternoon. Spider Jigs, tubes, Carolina-rigged centipedes and football jigs are all producing some nice smallies. Kentucky bass disappeared last week with the shad moving to shallower water. Walleye are out in the thermocline around points and over the flooded forest. A number of anglers have been vertically jigging a spoon and catching quite a few nice walleye. Long liners have also been having some success pulling smaller baits with leadcore line. Stay in 34 to 38 feet of water even on sunny hot days. As long as the walleyes food source is in the thermocline the walleye will stay there.
Sugar Loaf Harbor said the lake is 8 feet below normal. The lake clarity is good to 18 feet, where it gets cloudy, but the water gets clear again at 42 feet. Bream fishing is excellent from the surface down to 10 feet practically everywhere on the lake. Red wigglers have caught the most bream. Crappie fishing is good on minnows fished on slip-cork rigs over brush piles in 32 feet of water. Bass fishing is fair on crayfish around 20 feet deep. Catfishing is good using jug lines; some large cats are being taken.
Lake Norfork: Cranfield Junction Quik Stop said the lake is clear. Bream are biting well on main points and in the shallows from 3 to 5 feet deep on red worms and crickets. Crappie fishing is fair around 30 feet deep on jigheads baited with a minnow. Bass fishing is good on the deep (42-feet deep) drops on spoons. Early and late in the day, some bass are biting on jigs and top-water lures on main points. Catfishing is decent on nightcrawlers and shiners fished along the creek bends in 12 to 25 feet of water.
